If there’s one thing that's true of sustainability in the fashion industry, it’s that the only truly sustainable choice is to stop manufacturing new goods altogether. Unfortunately, people are going to continue to purchase new products no matter how bad things get. Because of this truth, it's up to us creatives to repurpose, to innovate, and to be extremely intentional when making new products.
Our biggest goal as a brand is to keep an open mind and be overwhelmingly dedicated to listening and learning. The world is changing quickly and best practices are not always as clear cut as “recycled” or “organic”. We are committed to doing the research and changing course when necessary to do as much as we possibly can to combat our impact.
Our first order of business was to shorten the distance our materials have to travel. This is one of many reasons we are dedicated to manufacturing our garments in the U.S. The less transportation our fibers and materials require, the less emissions we produce.
This is why it was also important that our raw materials were grown and processed here in the U.S. Our textile suppliers for our current line of products work closely with the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative to support sustainable agricultural practices. Purchasing the cotton itself so close to where it’s spun and knit not only cuts down on transportation distances but also eliminates the use of pesticides and chemicals needed to preserve the cotton during overseas transport.
Once we receive the materials, our garments are manufactured in Vernon California, just minutes from our Los Angeles office.
After our garments are made, we have to take a look at packaging. One of the quickest ways to have an impact is to choose post-consumer and compostable packaging. We partner with multiple brands for our tags, garment bags, labels, and boxes, to ensure we are doing the best we can within our current means to have a small footprint. There's a tremendous amount of greenwashing in the packaging industry, so we will continue to learn as we go and choose the best options we can find.
Lastly, one of the most important ways we want to tackle the issue of waste and overconsumption is to focus on quality over quantity. Dedication to aspirational designs of exceptional quality will always be our highest priority.
